Patiala becomes an alcoholic’s paradise

Patiala, May 15 The city has become an abode for drunkards. Men in inebriated condition can be seen openly drinking in every nook and corner of the city. While the cops have failed to curb the menace, it has become difficult for everyone especially the fairer sex to move around freely.

Areas such as Leela Bhawan, railway station, bus stand, Walled City, Shera Wala Gate, Sanauri Adda, Tripuri Market etc are the worst affected as here evenings come filled with nuisance for sober residents.

On Monday last, two persons allegedly under the influence of liquor created ruckus at the Shera Wala Gate area and the problem was resolved only after the residents intervened. “Sometimes it is next to impossible for us to walk due to the presence of drunkards, who are busy abusing in high pitch voice and use vulgar gestures,” said Maninder Kaur of Shera Wala Gate.

While cops patrol in the city, most of the times it is limited to the Leela Bhawan stretch or the busy main roads. “We can only request people not to drink at public places. Sadly, many respectable citizens are involved in this menace”, said a policeman.

“A few days ago, I was not feeling well and wanted to see my doctor but I did not dare to step out of my place following instructions by my husband due to a new liquor vend that had opened in our vicinity that attracts all sort of anti-social elements”, rued Varsha. “We had held a dharna last month to protest, but who cares,” she said, who is a resident of Badungar.

In this regard SP City Patiala RK Sharma told Newsline that the police were busy in Block Samiti polls and that’s why they could not check the menace in all parts of the city. “Now, you have brought the matter to my notice, I would definitely take an appropriate action,” he added.
